Don’t Pick Up that USB Thumbdrive!!!

You’re walking out to your car after a normal work day and you notice a USB drive in the parking lot.  It hasn’t been run over and looks like it’ll work.  You pick it up and notice it’s a 6GB drive, hey that’s a lot of data!  You think that it would be great to use to move things back and forth from laptop to PC or maybe just bring some music into work…  What a nice find!

Or is it!!!

It’s not!  USB thumbdrives are now very inexpensive and one of the interesting things about them is that when plugged in, they can run a program.  When new, sometimes this is a backup program or a music one, something that comes with the drive.  But, what if the program that starts is a virus that runs when you plug that USB drive in?  What if you bring it home to “take a look”, plug it in and now someone else ends up with access to your PCs, bank information, Quickbooks, taxes, everything?  What then?

So never ever ever plug a USB drive into your computer unless you know exactly where it came from and what’s running on it.  NEVER!  There are so many ways to get access to your personal data, don’t fall for this one.  It happens every day. 

Targets are financial institutions, banks, companies others are interested in targeting, could be anyone’s parking lot.  If you want to do something constructive with it, pick it up, break off the USB connector, and throw it away.  Just get rid of it so that someone else doesn’t get caught with the attack.
